Twice a year, OLV Charities likes to send out a communication to all their donors, various people involved with the OLV organizations, and Basilica parishioners. The purpose of this is to keep everyone up to date with all the happenings in the OLV organizations—OLV Human Services, OLV Charities, and OLV National Shrine & Basilica. This originally started out as a simple newsletter, but in 2021, it graduated to a full-color magazine with stories, photos, and spreads of everything OLV and WNY-related. When I started working at OLV Charities in the beginning of 2022, one of my many responsibilities was taking over the design of the magazine. Going off of what existed in the previous year and the different stories that were given to me, I added some more design flare, incorporated some larger spreads, and made sure the best-quality photos were used and on display. I incorporated some line illustrations into certain spreads and stories as well, to interact with the stories and push each of their messages more. I also paid extra special attention to the magazine covers, taking a photo of the Basilica dome and photoshopping in some blossoms for the spring issue, and taking a painting of the basilica and designing a cover with artistic elements for the fall issue.
The magazine is a really great piece of communication for the organization, and I can’t wait to see how the design and message evolves in future issues.
